Thoughtful, lonely, 11-year-old Maria spends a holiday with her parents by the sea, and finds a strange connection with a ten-year-old girl in a Victorian embroidered sampler in her elderly neighbour's house. Maria is changed by this strange link with people and events of one hundred years ago, and also by the very real and lively family next door, whose son Martin befriends her when he discovers she has an interest in fossils.
